Wings on our Trainers Editor's Pick

by Kaz
All smiles as we complete our first half marathon.
All smiles as we complete our first half marathon.

My sister Tracey and I have always shared everything. We had our tonsils out together, were pregnant and had our babies together, and we even found our passion for running together. We are in our mid forties and feel fit and fabulous now, but we will never forget that we are runners today because we have also shared grief and loss in the past.

In April 1996, my beautiful 22-month-old daughter, Abigail, died just six days after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She was the brightest, sunniest, cleverest little girl and my world was shattered. Tracey and her husband Kim were such a source of strength in this dark time. Then, tragically, in August 2000, my fun-loving, life-living, brother-in-law Kim died of lung cancer aged just 42. I was a mother without a daughter and Tracey was a wife without a husband.

Around Easter 2002, an article in our local paper about Race for Life leapt right out at me. It reported how you could run in memory of someone and also raise money for Cancer Research UK. Within minutes of reading it I just knew I wanted to do it for Abby and for Kim. I had never been active in any sport before and was a couple of stone overweight, but I just knew it was right for me and for Tracey. I remember phoning Tracey who at first gave me lots of very feeble excuses. She even tried telling me she couldn’t possibly run because her legs were too short. However, I have always been the bossy sister and eventually I cajoled her into registering for the race.

We downloaded the training plan from the website and followed it religiously. I remember that first session of 'run a minute/walk a minute' as if it was yesterday. Every single minute of running was AGONY. We waited desperately for the stopwatch to beep so that we could stop to walk, but then that minute of walking disappeared in what seemed like just a few seconds. It was scary moving up to the next stage, but within about eight weeks we were running for 15 minutes non-stop and were amazed by our progress.

That very first Race for Life will stay with me forever. I wore a sign on my back which said, “For my Angel Abigail.” My sister (and best friend) was at my side wearing her sign dedicated to Kim. Before the race there was a minute’s silence and I cried so much that I thought everyone was going to have to swim the five kilometres. Throughout the race I had a lump in my throat reading the signs that everyone else had on their backs, but we had wings on our trainers that day and both finished in just over 30 minutes. It was so, so special.

Of course, when the Race for Life was being advertised the following year there was no need to cajole Tracey. We just put on our trainers and started training again. My other children wrote special messages on the sign on my back and Tracey’s new partner joined my husband in raising sponsorship for us both.

This time, though, completing Race for Life just wasn’t enough for us, and we carried on running with two really special friends Dianne and Karen joining us to train. There was a summer series of 5K races organised along the seafront and we decided to give those a try. Back then we were proud of our 30-minute-plus finishing times. In September 2003 the four of us tentatively approached 3M Road Runners Gorseinon, a local running club who welcomed us with open arms. It was a different world out there, and we were getting drawn in deeper and deeper. We really discovered the true 'joys' of running. For example; foot pain, blisters, tight calves, bruised toe-nails, groin strain, hip pain and of course the dreaded runners’ trots.

Nevertheless in just 12 months at the club, between the four of us we had lost about 3.5 stone, knocked about 26 minutes off our collective 5K time, knocked about 51 minutes off our collective 10K time and upped our regular training session by 200%, from 1.5 miles when we joined the club to 4.5 mile runs after a year. The other members of 3M’s were FANTASTIC and the support, advice and friendship we were given were second to none.

Shortly after joining, we ran our first 10K race, soon followed by cross-country races and a relay race. We began training together for a half-marathon and completed that with lots of smiles and laughter in around two hours. It was at 3M’s that we met Kim, another true friend who fitted into our little training group so well, as she was recovering from breast cancer. We found out that her husband had been referee at a football match that the Swans had played in memory of my daughter and it had all been filmed by my brother-in-law Kim. Our friendship was destined to be, and Kim, Tracey, Karen, Dianne and myself became “The BackPack” – so called because we are usually at the back end of the field.

Running is now so engrained in our lives. We have taken on challenge after challenge. Last year we ran London Marathon together, once again proudly wearing Abby and Kim on our backs and finishing in just over 4 hours 30. We have even taken up swimming and cycling and have begun to dabble in triathlon.

Losing Abby and Kim changed our lives in so many ways, for despite our immense grief, we have found a healthy lifestyle, amazing friends, and an all-consuming love of running. We are never going to win any races and we are never going to shatter any records, but our sense of personal achievement is HUGE. In the past, someone called us 'Tragic Sisters', but we are far from that. We are fun-loving, happy, lucky sisters who have found that running has helped us survive whatever life has thrown at us.

I can’t imagine my life now without running being a part of it. I have no doubt at all that we might one day be grannies with a purple rinse and perm, but we will still be wearing our running kit!

I know one of these amazing women and have been truly touched and inspired - not only by the story here and the sporting achievements made, but by the every day energy, genuineness and diverse talent of my colleague and friend Karen Burrows. Wishing you fitness, fun and friendship forever!

Stories like this one makes me feel proud of my gender!! Strong women, with no fear in facing whatever life brings - and it can be so bad sometimes! - and with the ability to transform things around them! Thanks for sharing your story with us, and keep on running!

Harriet Cable Thursday, June 01, 2006 04:52:57 PM

I am one of the many many members of 3M Gorseinon Road Runners who are proud to call the BackPack' my friends. Their determination and sense of humour is amazing !!!!!!

Fay Sharpe Thursday, June 01, 2006 05:08:19 PM

We are two of the 3Ms and Celtic Tri members who are proud to call the Backpack friends. We know of their story, but reading it again brings a tear.If you met this gang you would know them without introduction as their enthusiasm for life is wonderfully infectious.

John And Gill Nicholls Thursday, June 01, 2006 09:38:20 PM

I'm very proud to say that Karen and Tracey are my big sisters. I live 200 miles away so, unfortunately, wasn't around to get swept along by their enthusiasm. I may be a few years late but, inspired by their amazing lead, will be attempting my first Race for Life this year. I wonder whether I'll be mad enough to be running a marathon in a few years too :0)...who knows!

Nicola Lester Thursday, June 01, 2006 09:45:34 PM

Hia! Your story was very touching! I ran the race for life last year beacause my mother had Hodgkins disease and i wanted too run to raise money for Cancer Reasearch. I am one of the lucky ones who is proud to say my mother pulled through, but i have also lost family members becse of cancer. Its not a nice thing when it hits home. I think its a good thing what you are doin because all the money you have raised will go to a good cause and can hopefully bring hundreds of people through this terrible disease! Good luck! And run with a smile!

Jenna Thomas Thursday, June 01, 2006 10:06:45 PM

I know Karen and Tracy and also knew Abigail and Kim. Abigail was my god daughter and we loved her a lot. The way Karen has coped with losing her beautiful daughter is a constant source of wonder to me. She has such positve energy and her running and other charity works are amazing. Likewise, Tracy has also coped with her loss of Kim by helping other cancer sufferers. Both sisters are gems, not only do they run and work for cancer charities, they work full time, bring uo their children, look after their homes and still have time to help others. Good luck to them in everything they do

Gloria Owens Thursday, June 01, 2006 10:42:17 PM

What a wonderful story - it brought tears to my eyes. If you never give up you can achieve so much - well done to both of you - you are an inspiration to everyone. Keep on running - Love and peace, sharon

Sharon Lovell Friday, June 02, 2006 11:36:16 AM

At the risk of over-using "inspiration" in my comments, this is one of the most compelling stories of determination, dedication and commitment that I've been a witness to. It truly tugs at the "heart-strings" and provides the recipe for turning tragedy into a life-affirming commitment to helping and motivating others... as I sit here in my office in Virginia (USA), consider this retired U.S. Naval Officer genuinely touched, duly motivated, and extremely inspired! Keep up the good work, ladies!!

Hugh Cox Friday, June 02, 2006 12:29:23 PM

very inspiring story, well done to my two wonderful aunties :D I miss Kim & Abigail so much! :'(

Ryan Friday, June 02, 2006 02:45:40 PM

Hayley Davies Friday, June 02, 2006 02:57:17 PM

Inspiring story about two girls who are still giving their time and effort to fund raising and their running. Keep it up as chasing behind you keeps me running. All the very best Tina Newton x

Tina Newton Friday, June 02, 2006 06:05:40 PM

I am proud to have known these ladies and their family since I was 13 years old, I'm now in my forties. To say they are amazing women and an inspiration to me is an understatement. To have achieved, what they have achieved, after such tradegies is unbelievable. I am also running the Race for life this year with their sister in London, so I know they will be willing us on. I will always have fond memories of Abigail and Kim and I know they will be smiling upstairs and bursting with pride. You go girls! You never cease to amaze me.

Anita Kaye Saturday, June 03, 2006 11:17:51 AM

As fellow 3M-ers we have profound respect and affection for the 'backPackers'. They have the mindset to change 'couldn't possibly..' to 'what if...' and are inspirational. Elfed & Margaret Joseph

Elfed Joseph Sunday, June 04, 2006 09:51:00 PM

A wonderful story of courage in the face of great loss. Good luck with the running and everything else.

Linda Jones Monday, June 05, 2006 09:17:06 AM

I have been a member of 3Ms Road Runners for just under 12 months and in that time, I have been lucky enough to meet and train with all of the members, but in particular the "Back Pack". They truly are an amazing bunch of ladies and I am very proud that they have allowed me to join them. They are great sources of inspiration and persuaded me that I really could run a half marathon (I had not run more than 5k before joining the club!). I thouroughly enjoyed every minute of it and intend running a marathon this year (hopefully with Kaz (Karen) as my training partner). I can guarantee that there is no greater inspiration to run a bit faster and train a bit harder than being chased by the Back Pack!! Well done girls! :o)

Nikki Smith Monday, June 05, 2006 09:55:45 AM

We are also fellow members of 3Ms and Celtic Tri and these 2 ladies are an inspiration to us all. They have the determination and dedication to achieve in everthing they do and they always look good at the finish! Good luck to you both.

Jayne & Paul Arnold Monday, June 05, 2006 10:57:22 AM

A very sad but inspiring story. What a remarkable, determined pair of women. I remember being told about Abby, by a friend of Karen's. At the time, I had just had my first child and could hardly begin to imagine the anguish and devastation Karen and her family must have been feeling. Keep up the hard work both of you! Best of luck with Race for Life.

Debbie Brown Monday, June 05, 2006 11:17:49 AM

Fantastic!

Matthew Williams Monday, June 05, 2006 11:41:14 AM

A very moving story which goes to show that out of adversity comes strength. I admire the courage of these ladies and doubt that anyone could read the account with feeling somewhat emotional. Keep up the good work and I truly hope you reach your goal.

Les Boor Monday, June 05, 2006 01:30:24 PM

Kaz & Tracey are a shining example of how running brings people together and seals friendships for life. They've conquered The London Marathon and if you think they'll stop there then you don't know them. They have an amazing energy about them, and are so inspirational to all of us. They put a great big smile on our faces. We love them to bits. Pilot & Linda

Paul Rees Monday, June 05, 2006 03:33:51 PM

Even though I have known Tracey for a number of years and was fully aware of the situation this story really tugs at the heart strings. Well done to you both and good luck in everything you do in the future.XX

A very inspiring story, it makes you want to put on your trainers and run with them.

Gaynor Smith Monday, June 05, 2006 09:37:34 PM

Having dabbled with triathlons I decided to try and improve my running and joined 3Ms running club 10 months ago, I turned up a bit hesitant on the first training session and the first two people to greet me with a smile were these two fantastic Ladies. Since then I found they always meet you with a smile and provide plenty of encouragement and support. I know look forward to going running on a Wednesday night with this great Club due to the good nature of all the people involved.Kaz and Tracy I salute you both and keep on running.

James Davies Tuesday, June 06, 2006 09:51:25 AM

I don't think that I've ever met someone with a sunnier disposition than Karen. She struggles daily with thoughts of her beautiful lost daughter Abigail in a way which is truly admirable. By the same token, I'm sure that Tracy struggles with the loss of the ever-upbeat Kim. Your are both a true inspiration to your families and friends and, no doubt, an inspiration to many more besides. Keep up the good work!

Andrew Burrows Tuesday, June 06, 2006 10:12:37 AM

These are two teriffic ladies and you can't help but feel inspired by their story, especially if you've lost someone to cancer. Henry & Donna Hayward

Henry Hayward Tuesday, June 06, 2006 10:29:16 AM

A story full of heart and the depths of love and pain - well done you two wonderful women!!! ;-) You might have just given me the oomph I needed to start running myself!

Alex Waters Tuesday, June 06, 2006 10:45:02 AM

You amazing women - you have survived and grown in strength through such adversity - you are an inspiration to all and your story needs to be out there to inspire others who are going through such grief. See you at the next 10k! There is nothing like the freedom of running in the fresh sea air(even if it is typical Swansea rain!)I took up running again at 50 and love it!

Viv Makin Tuesday, June 06, 2006 11:07:18 AM

I have known Tracey for nearly 7 years now and I have watched admiringly not only how much time and effort she has put into her training but how much enjowyment she gets out of it in return. Joanne Cook Wednesday, June 07, 2006 10:24:33 AM

Karen is a work colleague and although I knew she had lost a child, reading her details here has reinforced what a tremendous, positive person she is; she has weathered a storm that most of us would find very difficult to overcome. Long may she continue to find fulfillment and friendship through her efforts to raise funds for cancer sufferers. I feel truly inspired by her commitment and I will continue to support and admire Karen.

Jenny Peek-Hughes Wednesday, June 07, 2006 01:11:45 PM

i am so proud of them that when i read the story i got goose bumps all over it must be so hard to train as they are both full time workers with children i some times think about them whem i moan about doing stupid little chores which they have to do as well as all the training good luck in all that you do.xxxxxxxxxxxx

Tina Davies Wednesday, June 07, 2006 01:29:12 PM

This is such a moving story - I too find it hard to read it without filling up with tears. I run with (or rather run behind) Karen and Tracey at 3Ms Road Runners , and they are two lovely ,kind girls who have been through an experience which the rest of us don't even want to begin to imagine. I find their commitment to running just awesome. They have an incredible zest for life and are truly inspirational.

Susan Davies Thursday, June 08, 2006 11:29:26 AM

As Abby's godparents, we know the terrible heartache that Karen has been through over the past ten years. Yet despite this, nothing is ever too much for Karen. She is always so willing to do so much for others. Losing a beautiful daughter is something a parent never gets over, yet Karen gains so much from life and gives so much in return. Karen and Tracey are a truly inspirational pair with a will and determination that most of us can only dream of. You're amazing!Well done to you both! Keep up the hard work!

I know these ladies too through 3MS. their story is just so sad, but their amazing forward looking & real achievements through the joys of running, maybe, will be an inspiration to others who read their story and who are also suffering loss and sadness. Their story, courage and achievements- True grit, good luck.

Gary Howe Monday, June 12, 2006 09:24:22 AM

These ladies have been a real inspiration to me in my training.... keep it up ladies !

I am very proud to have Karen as a friend, she is always there for me when I need her. I don't stay in touch as often as I should, but time makes no difference as Kaz is just there whenever I need to talk, or need anything. I have given Kaz a nickname, to me she is 'forest gump', I watched the film and thought that's Karen, always running. I will often be driving along when I am reminded of her dedication to running - there she is, in spite of the weather, running along with her sister at her side, this is truly amazing because we went through college and university together and I can clearly remember those long walks from the Uni carpark, with arms loaded high with books, and regular trips between lecture theatres and coffee shops - we would regularly quicken our pace, but never did we run! Kaz was always the motivated, energetic one, balancing her childcare responsibilities and family life with her committment to learning. Despite her personal level of grief, she has a natural ability to sence the misfortune of others, and an ability to put sunshine in their lives -she kept me going through some difficult times. This is a fantastic opportunity for me to pay tribute to a truly amazing woman, who is an inspiration to all who know her. So keep running Kaz, I REALLY BELIEVE that you and Tracey have wings, you both deserve so much happiness in your lives - it time for good fortuine to shine, and shine, and shine, and shine, and shine on you.

I have already commented about this pair but feel i must add just a bit more. This week both the girls myself and the culb we run for entered the castles relay in Wales. I had never run this race befor and was very nervous Tracy who was to run my leg with me kept giving me reassurance and support pre race. I found the race very hard and there were many momments when i was ready to give up. However, Tracey kept with me all the way even though she could have run a better faster race. She talked, advised, supported, and generally kept me running, she made light of my complaining and even at the finish gave me praise for finishing. What a STAR and true friend. You all thought that this story did not included Karen but this is where this pair shine. Karen supported all along the course stopping at different points cheering, giving support, water and a smile. What a deserving pair who show true freindship where it counts. MANY MANY THANKS TO THEM BOTH Tina Newton

Tina Newton Tuesday, June 13, 2006 09:26:39 AM

What courage and strength to raise money for others with this dreadful illness.

Marian Carthew Tuesday, June 13, 2006 10:10:31 AM

The tears are pouring down my face, I cannot begin to imagine what your grief must be like. I nearly lost my son and I don't want to get any closer than nearly. When I go out to run tomorrow I shall run for Kim & Abbie and the amazing Tracey & Karen will be my inspiration to keep going when the going gets tough.

Dave Walsh Thursday, June 22, 2006 10:28:37 AM

Being Traceys partner I have followed her running career with total amazement, from her short leg syndrome, to watching her train 10 miles in the wind and rain, from watching her breathless and sweaty after her first 5k to seeing her beaming when spotting her son after 15miles in London. In all her photos, every one has her beautiful big smile shining through even after all she's suffered. Her enthusiasm and drive has even encouraged me to join the triathlon club and thats an amazing achievement in itself! Good luck to you both, the world of triathlon doesn't stand a chance!X

Paul Wilkins Thursday, June 22, 2006 06:03:37 PM

I am very proud to have Kaz as a work colleague and friend. She is our very own "superwoman" here at the NSPCC. I listen in awe at Kaz`s tales of her running/swimming/triathlons etc - she is such an amazing lady. She took part in the London Marathon last year even though she was in a lot of pain and discomfort after sustaining a whiplash injury in a car accident a few days prior to the marathon. She was so determined to compete in the event, in memory of her beautiful little girl Abigail. So keep those running shoes on ladies - you are 2 amazing sisters who have come through an incredible journey together. With love Marilyn xx

Marilyn Thomas Wednesday, June 28, 2006 08:01:15 PM

What more can I say that hasn't already been said? You are both so inspirational, your drive and determination to get the most out of every situation is amazing and I stand in awe regularly. The strength that you have both gained from your tragedies is an inspiration to all who surround you. I have been lucky enough to share your running journey with you and I am extremely blessed to call you both really special friends - the bond the 'backpack' share is such an extremely important one in my life. You both (along with Di and Kim) have given me so much in the last few years - not only companionship on training runs, swims and cycle rides (for events which are usually either Kaz's or Tracey's ideas and I get talked into!), but also personally - you've always been there for me - to share the tears and laughter. I love you both. Ka x x x PS Did I mention that they really are barking?

Karen Grey Friday, July 07, 2006 03:13:33 PM

What a moving story - and as somebody who has just talked her running partner out of a run, I feel ashamed that I made an excuse!Don't know either of personally, but admire you already!!

Debbie Oliver Friday, July 07, 2006 05:02:54 PM

My mum is a work colleague of Karen`s and talks very fondly of her - I feel I already know this amazing lady. Keep up the good work and best wishes to you both for many more happy years of running and raising funds for such a worthwhile cause. Sharn Thomas (Bristol).
