At the age of 30 I had been in the same office job since leaving school in 1990 and apart from a bit of five a side footy that was about all the exercise I had taken.
In 2003 I weighed in at 16 stone, and my waist had gone upto a size 38" (ouch). At school I was sport mad and running came easy but at 30 things were very different. I had to force myself out of bed at 6.30 each morning and set a simple goal of completing a lap of the block form my house (about 2 miles). It took few months of pain before I could do a full lap without stopping, and I was starting to enjoy the run.
It was Christmas 2003 and a friend asked me if I fancied having a go at the Marie Curie 10k which was in March 04. I stepped up the distance and by I was running 10k without stopping and I completed the race in 48 mins (well chuffed).
I had the running bug and ran nearly every day in 2004, but I needed a challenge and at the end of 04 I found it. Mens Health had printed an article about Triathlon and it grabed my imagination. After a bit of web surfing I found a local sprint event (400m swim, 20km bike, 5k run) and it seemed liked a fair size mountain to climb.
I got around the course with no problems and was hooked, I entered all my local events and the London triathlon, 2005 was a fantastic year .
This year I went further and set my goal on Ironman UK (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a full marathon) lots of training, but well worth it. I completed it in 13hrs and 49mins and it was all made possible by making the effort to take a run around the block.
I'm now just under 13 stone a 34" waist and loving life. I have also entered Ironman UK 2007.
